Recently Eluvium was commissioned to score a new exhibit by renowned installation artist, Charles Long, for The Austin Contemporary museum. This album is a highly limited artifact from that exhibit, pressed in a numbered edition of 300. Each side of opaque cream-colored vinyl features a single, side-long 20-minute composition by Eluvium. The pieces play on a constant loop during the exhibit on these very records, so this is not just simply a record, it’s a piece of fine art. housed in gorgeous hand-printed metallic gold and royal purple jackets, each copy also includes a matching screen-printed download card and custom envelope. Groove Armada’s landmark debut album ‘Northern Star’ gets a special 15th Anniversary re-release with a second disc of bonus material
Back in February 1996 the world was introduced to the funky Balearic sounds of Groove Armada via the ‘Dan Solo / Captain Sensual’ single on Tummy Touch. One year and three more singles later Simba and Big C, the men at the helm of the mighty Groove Armada, proudly presented their debut album, Northern Star.
Groove Armada recorded their debut album over the summer of 1997 in a secluded cottage in North Yorkshire where Andy set up his studio. They worked on dancefloor material during the sun-filled days and the more laid back grooves around the open fire at night. This unique setting no doubt contributed to the albums deeply atmospheric and unique sound.
The album is an easy-going and eclectic mix of music for clubbers, to be used before, during and after the party. The British press raved about the album and the previous singles were received equally well and Groove Armada went on to become one of the UK’s biggest dance music exports.
2013, marks the 15th anniversary of Groove Armada’s first ever release and in celebration Tummy Touch have remastered Northern Star, adding a bonus CD featuring every single Groove Armada track the label released. Enjoy!

Quite easily our favourite 12k release for some time – an incredible blend of field recordings, found sounds and Janek’s signature manipulated transmissions, if you’re a fan of The Caretaker – this is an absolute must. “The composition is his calmest yet, and is based around location recordings made in the middle of the night above the M3 motorway, right at the end of the road where JG Ballard lived, a couple of miles from Schaefer’s studio on the far west edge of London. Ballard wrote his seminal works on car culture, as the motorway was being built past the front of his house in 1973; Crash (1973), Concrete Island (1974). The 73 minute album weaves these location recordings around a series of spacious sonorities, that shimmer with analogue textures and liminal melodies that burnout in the passing headlights. The speeding traffic dopplertrails reveal fleeting passages of soporific sounds that entice you to recline, drift and fade away. An album to enjoy with your eyes closed, on repeat play until the dawn rush hour returns… Lay-by Lullaby was created in 2013 as a sculptural installation for Schaefer’s solo London show ’Collecting Connections’ at the Agency gallery. A pair of reclining traffic speaker cones play back the foundsoundscape from a car radio installed in a little leather travel case on infinite loop.”

Snow Ghosts’ 3rd single from ‘A Small Murmuration’ features remixes of its most enigmatic highlight, ‘Secret Garden’ by none other than Richard Skelton and Matthew Herbert. Skelton’s re-working (is this his first ever remix?) is just fantastic – keeping the vocal intact but replacing the space previously occupied by the drums with a rolling soundscape of his trusted bowed strings and a synth drone that’s completely outside his musical comfort zone. It’s a striking juxtaposition that’s opened our eyes to what might happen if this amazing producer would reach outside his usual palette – and although the vocal is just too sweet for our liking, the production is genuinely mesmerising. By contrast, Matthew Herbert takes the same cut to the ‘floor with lithe, rolling drums and supple bass, also included as an instrumental, whilst ‘Covenant’ showcases Snow Ghosts’ diversity in other directions with darker trip hop tones and a Tricky-style vocal from Dahlia Black aka Kwesi Darko aka Blue Daisy. But anyway – get this for that Skelton mix!

‘Poemss’ is a musical project from Toronto-based producer and music artist Joanne Pollock in collaboration with Aaron Funk, who’s recorded music as Venetian Snares. They met in Europe but when Joanne played Aaron her music and visited him at his studio, collaboration started to happen soon after. Poemss will surprise anyone who equates Aaron’s music solely with his hard-edged, drum-driven output. The record is the result of a true partnership, with both artists contributing to the writing and performance of the music, the technical aspects of production and to the performance and treatment of the vocals. The result is a collection of soft and dreamlike ballads; Aaron and Joanne’s singing adding both texture and poetry to the album. They explain how the record came about: “This album was made between January and May of 2013.To us, this album is an album of beginnings. It s the beginning of knowing someone, the beginning of a new creative endeavour, and fresh possibilities. The very first song that we wrote together is included in these tracks, and was to us just an experiment. As musicians, it seemed natural to see what we would make. We can hear ourselves becoming more comfortable with each other as it progresses; an evolution recorded in an album. This record comes from a very intimate place for both of us, largely because it was recorded in Aaron’s house, where Joanne was visiting at the time. However, although it was recorded in Winnipeg, to us this record seems less rooted in a particular place or time, and seems more to be born out of our thoughts, dreams, and reflections. Listening back to every track, it is difficult for us to isolate which parts either of us brought individually to each song. We launch each other creatively, melodically. One of us will usually be inspired again to add to what the other is laying down and it works in a kind of cycle like this. It’s a nice way to flow and pleasantly surprising to see what the other person brings to it. Much of the time, it really sounds like the two of us together rather than a combination of what we do individually.”

It’s been nearly 5 years since Brock’s highly acclaimed “White Clouds Drift On And On” debuted on Echospace earning a plethora of critical acclaim including many coveted top albums of the year list from RA to The Wire.
Brock returns in beautiful form with what he’s said to us is his most personal and self defining moment in his fruitful musical career. This album however strikes on a very different chord from the last, rather than find contentment in repeating himself he’s sculpted a unique sound slightly out of focus from his previous work, a sound one could only say is like drifting in and out of consciousness. A place where early lsd experiments reveal third dimensions of the mind and evoke emotions so powerful they haunt you forever. Here we see Brock’s true dedication to vision, maturity and growth, the reason why so many people have gravitated to his heart tugging productions.
On, “Home’ he paints a near 3 hour exploration so beautiful and hypnotic the listener feels as if only moments passed by, a second to forever. This is a welcome return to form in the one place Brock refers to as, “Home” here on Echospace. If Burial were to meet Eno in the studio of a BBC radio workshop session with Tape masters sent to Steve Roach for further deconstruction this might be the unique result, residing somewhere in the ether. Brock has truly blown us away yet again with another stunning masterpiece.

Vermont is the coming together of two of dance music’s most respected pioneers; Innervisions’ Marcus Worgull and Danilo Plessow, most famous for his deep house moniker Motor City Drum Ensemble. Having signed to the highly-respected Cologne-based dance label Kompakt, the pair set about working on what has become their forthcoming self-titled album, which mainly foregoes the house and techno of their respective pasts in favour of krautrock-tinged soundscapes. In fact, the album features a handful of krautrock luminaries such as Can’s Jaki Liebezeit and Phantom Band’s Dominik Von Senger, with songs developing out of a series of “loose jam sessions” as if to prove their dedication to the genre. On the first song to emerge from the album, the ambient haze of Majestät – premiered here – the pair utilise the plethora of vintage analogue synthesizers they had at their disposal, with various layers of ever-expanding synths carefully unfurling over distant percussion and a delicate, metronomic beat.

Another strong offering from Exotic Pylon, this time from Ed Gillett, an artist interested in "the creative use of repetition, open collaboration, the enjoyment of mistakes and sub-bass." Rhythmically referencing 2-step and the early 90s breakbeat techno of The Black Dog, and exploring dreamy electronic textures within this framework that look outward into the realms of pure psychedelia. On ‘Concentration’ what sounds like an old El-B/Ghost riddim slugged out and married to the kind of dreamy ambience you’d expect to find on a John Beltran record, while ‘Air White Smoke Signal’ is a terrifically effective meshing of dubbed-out post-punk minimalism and twinkling techno FX, and stand-out offering ‘Mzungu’ sounds like an old Balil or B12 record re-tooled for dubstep-savvy soundboys. In the end though, what makes this album good isn’t the breadth or specificity of the reference points, but the elegance and intelligence with which they’re handled – Gillett balances grit and goo impressively throughout. Fans of R&S, Apollo, 2009/10-era Hotflush and Frijsfo Beats will want to be checking this – a debut of adventurous promise.
