The authors of the mix are Daniele Antezza and Giovanni Conti, also known as Dadub, an Italian electronic music duo and mastering engineers based in Berlin, Germany. Dadub used to be a solo project started by sound designer and musician Antezza in 2008. However, soon he was joined by Conti who was working on the interactive digital art projects at that time. Conti has brought a vast baggage of knowledge about hardware and software and duo immersed into producing. Both members are working in Artefacts Mastering studio and are highly connected to Stroboscopic Artefacts label where they have released 4 EPs and recent critically acclaimed debut album “You Are Eternity”. Influenced by King Tubby and fascinated by Lee Scratch Perry’s mix board experiments, Dadub is looking for innovative ways to merge old production formulas, new technical possibilities and sound constructing modules. “We care a lot of low frequencies and deep hypnotic atmospheres, and we both were drummers, so we guess the beats are important for us, both the patterns and the sounds,” Dadub says about their music characteristics in the interview for Electric Deluxe. While combining embossed techno rhythms and music related to dub and ambient sound textures, Dadub extracts carefully measured audio structures that could be described as moving colossal monuments. Their dynamic and powerful live performances were showcased internationally at Sonar festival in Barcelona, Melt! festival in Germany and in clubs from Berlin to Moscow and New York. So there is no doubt that the audience will hear a lot from this prominent duo in the nearest future.

By following Dadub’s recent recordings for Boiler Room, Resident Advisor and Electronic Explorations Secret Thirteen is happy to present their latest influential selection together with the celebration of the 100th mix of ours. Dadub’s selection indirectly reflects our previous mixes because it carries a lot of different stylistic motives ranging from techno, IDM, experimental to ambient, world and contemporary music. “The selection encompasses different historical moments of electronic music evolution, from the first futurist experiments (Russolo’s composition was composed in 1914) ’till the contemporary approaches,” says Dadub. The duo has connected 48 lasting records to form the sustained almost 2 hours complex mix where they have used tracks as tools to express their emotions through them. Even though the selection is deliberately eclectic Dadub wisely finds alternative ways to connect the most capricious tracks and to mask the tension between pieces that sometimes resonate. Spectral content of recorded material is always changing and smoothly reshaping its trajectory, it balances between formless compositions and rhythmical sound architecture. Dadub uses diverse audio layers to form completely new structures, new harmonies and constantly expanding sound constructions. They have dubbed and overdubbed this mix by using their new effect set up, a feedback system made by using analog vintage mixer and a couple of dirty delays. It is important to mention that this mix includes many diverse records that were evolved from dub music or could be strongly related to this genre. Among the sublime works by such respectable talents as John Cage, William Basinski, Demdike Stare, Jan Jelinek, Rhythm and Sound, Retina.it the listener will hear 4 pieces from Dadub catalog too. 2 of Dadub’s unpublished experimentations were cut from their performance at Atonal Festival 2013. All in all, “Secret Thirteen Mix 100” is a picturesque and attentively planned audio expedition through depths of emotional horizons and peaks of timeless electronic music.

Once again split over four parts, our 2013 round-up commences with 14 unique pieces of electronic music you really need to know about. They range from mind-bending avant-garde systems to rugged house and clinical electro, taking in the cutting edge of UK grime, grid-dissolving Kiwi D&B and styles that haven’t been christened yet. Joane Skyler’s playfully fractal jungle jaunt, ‘Foam’, has provided us no end of fun this year, whilst the advanced structures of Rashad Becker’s ‘Traditional Music Of Notional Species Vol.1’ and the psychoacoustic techniques of Xopher Davidson & Zbigniew Karkowski have triggered the sort of rare sensations we return to over and again. Equally, artists such as Marina Rosenfeld, Wanda Group and Alex Gray’s D/P/I have deeply infected our listening habits with their intra-dimensional probings, and we’ve been very excited about the time-and-space-bending contortions of A Made Up Sound, FIS, Mordant Music and Logos, who’re all taking UK-rooted dance music to stranger, nexx levels. The second of our 2013 round-ups intersects all manner of cosmic electronics, avant-pop and lustrous R&B. Rather than a definitive overview of this nebulous spectrum, we’d rather take this opportunity to highlight those pieces that might not end up on every end-of-year list, but rather quietly stood out as unique or affecting and stuck in the memory more than others. We’ve been smitten with Ensemble Economique’s epic, defocussed soft rock number ‘We Come Spinning Out Of Control’ off his amazing ‘Fever Logic’ album, and can’t help but return again and again to the breathtaking electronic denouement of The Stranger’s “Where Are Our Monsters Now, Where Are Our Friends?”. Solo female voices were strongly felt both metaphorically and literally, from Laura Groves’ heart-melting ‘Inky Sea’ to Jessy Lanza’s suggestive, Junior Boys-produced soul bomb, ‘Pull My Hair Back’ thru to the probing use of sound design and technique in Katie Gately’s hyper vivid eponymous debut for Public Information and the canny avant compositions of Lucrecia Dalt. At the further (upper) reaches of lo-fi cosmic imagination, the likes of Gnod’s Marlene Ribeiro aka Negra Branca, and Matt Mondanile (Ducktails) & Spencer Clark’s Egyptian Sports Network channelled beautifully free vibes for our benefit, whilst former Broadcast-er Roj offered a divergent yet equally well-schooled vision of stellar synth musics.

As ever, the dynamos of Chicago and Detroit delivered deadly, advanced ideas, most notably in the kinetic energies of Footwork founder RP Boo on ‘Area 72’ or the twisted flux of Traxman’s ‘Manic’, and Optic Nerve repped the rarest Detroit sound with the breathtaking ‘Time Lapse (Time Displacement Mix)’ by-passing pretty much everyone. Related, but twisting in divergent directions, Lotic and Lil Jabba applied individual signatures with the fibrillating ‘Sankofa’ and body-bending triplets of ‘Serum’. Closer to home, the resurgence and mutation of instrumental grime was a joy to witness, especially in future-shocking anthems such as SOPHIE’s ‘Bipp’ or Mssingno’s ‘Xe2’, whilst Slackk and Visionist owned it with their incisive advances. Likewise the UK’s riddim engine worked like few others, turning out exceptional constructions such as Joe’s ‘Maximum Busy Muscle’ and the Mumdance & Logos epic, ‘In Reverse P.I.V.’, whereas the likes of Bristol’s Livity Sound and Glasgow’s Golden Teacher had forward-looking tribalism on lock, albeit with respectively idiosyncratic results.

Brian Pyle is becoming a big name in disquieting ambient and haunted audio, and two new releases (this and Light that Comes, Light that Goes) from him this week aptly explain why. Interval Signals is an enticingly evocative story, a single-take journey through a series of interiors and exteriors spaces layered with memories and geographies. Melancholy like an old crime scene, its mixture of ancient broadcasts, echoes trapped in the dusty twentieth-century telephone network, spiritualistic tuned percussion and stumbling Romantic piano with strongly emplacing sounds and field recordings both suggestive and bewildering. This will interest those who know what Leyland Kirby, The Focus Group and Infinity Frequencies know, but it also hints at artists like Mike Nelson and filmmakers like Abbas Kiarostami, and really creates a setting that ventures beyond the usual metaphors of mournful archaism. Gently profound and highly recommended.

Washed up on the shores of Brighton UK, we find “A Slab About Being Held Captive” laying there quietly in the sand. This soaking enigma is the latest creation of Louis Johnstone, following up an influx of recent vinyl on Opal Tapes, Notown, Where To Now?, and Svetlana Industries. Since their debut release “Bass Urine” on NNA in 2011, Wanda and the girls have matured to a new point of refinement, sinking deeper into the careful organization of disconcerting sounds. “A Slab” truly is a seasick collage, with a pervading aqueous essence flowing throughout the two side-long pieces, carrying along with it fragments of field and domestic recordings and sample clutter. Syrupy waves of sound meld into one another with cinematic pacing, forming a gelatinous backdrop for hard cut interjections of concréte style sample manipulation, lending themselves to an air of confusing tension. As the liquid bath abruptly turns to slate, a group of gulls squawk at a bubble filled with muffled porno moans as they glide by. Body sounds and animal conversations are drowned out by the mechanical purrs of an industrial assembly line, sputtering and choking their last breaths as they struggle to stay afloat. Maddening tones seem to permeate from within, sizzling their way through the stereo field like two magnets dancing, drilling through the headspace. This hypnotic phenomena forces the mind inward, reducing it to a skull full of opiate brain mush and half-cooked soggy memories. These collections of moments may fall shamelessly into near-nothingness at any given time, eventually refilling themselves with sound in a cyclical rising and falling, perhaps acting as an abstract reflection on mental states of indifference, alienation, or just general life terror and bleakness. Wanda’s ability to maintain compositional fluidity throughout such a dynamic range of materials is reinforced by an original sense of movement and pacing, and the ability to form a creative symbiosis between cold sterility and organic warmth. Although ultimately, it’s probably best left to the artist’s own words:

Alex Cuervo has been rattling skulls for years in punk & garage bands like The Hex Dispensers, Blacktop, This Damn Town & Feast of Snakes. 2011 saw the release of two solo EPs under his own name, exploring his interest in darker, synth-oriented punk music. Since then, the Texan native has not only honed his skills on the synthesizer, but constructed this 13-song suite of instrumentals that owe a serious debt to the pioneers of late-seventies horror soundtracks like John Carpenter, Italo-prog masters Goblin & the work of German pioneers Tangerine Dream.

“Espectrostatic” unfolds like the soundtrack to a lost horror classic, with it’s pulsing synths & ominous passages inferring the unleashing of an ancient, horror creating a Lovecraft-ian musical journey. The tracks range from near ambient clouds of dread (”Consulting The Necronauts”) to throbbing tunes that could almost be mistaken for the goth-club floor-fillers created by Skinny Puppy & Soft Cell (”Phantom Swarm”). This is music made for the night & all things that reside therein. The LP edition of “Espectrostatic” is pressed on 150gm black vinyl & includes a download code. Offered as metaphor and delivered as analogy…
The Blizzard That Birthed Her is the continuing echo of this year’s Home Normal success, Book Of The Folded Forest. Birthed as two original Orla Wren tracks ‘Five Acre Ladder’ and ‘Mountains And Wishbones’ which were recorded in the same session, Tui then worked the cello, bass and vocals of Aaron Martin into two alternative versions of each track, making up the 4 tracks on the 10” vinyl for Facture.
He then offered the same to Isnaj Dui who contributed some flute for him to then create the two versions with her as guest. To complete the companion 8 track letter pressed CD version the two “reprise” versions were created by Tui utilizing parts from the other tracks.

The Blizzard That Birthed Her cannot be called an album in the strictest sense. It consists of two original tracks, each one of which has been recorded four times including two separate takes of each with different collaborators. At their most basic – the opening, unaccompanied blueprint of Five Acre Ladder – they build and swirl on the sparest of electronic melodies over a plateau of drone, creating worlds that are at once misty and earthy. Orla Wren’s individual pieces are each like a single exhalation drawn out and slowed so that every particle of air, every bit of woodland mist, every icy molecule of breath is discernible. And like breaths that are given personality by external forces – tiredness, passion, fear – each of these pieces is markedly different, whilst retaining the overarching character of the species. The atonal bells and wordless vocals on the Aaron Martin take of Five Acre Ladder give the tune a processional, pagan quality, while the flute of Isnaj Dui suggests a subtler, more lithe form of movement. Martin’s cello takes centre stage on his version of the second track, Mountains And Wishbones, which has the most discernible build and fade (or inhalation and exhalation) of anything here.

When a musician’s artistic vision is as singular as that of Orla Wren – the collaborative arm of electro-acoustic soundscaper Tui – it serves little purpose to compare it with other performers. Indeed, The Blizzard That Birthed Her appears to owe as much to sound art, field recording and sculpture as it does to folk, or electronic popular music. In particular, the variety of land art as practiced by Robert Smithson or Richard Long comes to mind. The circular or cyclical nature of these tracks mirrors the use of circles as archetypal shapes in much of Long’s work. And of course the organic side of this music, the idea of growth within nature as a basic constituent of performance or sculpture, is something that Long has been doing throughout his career.

In addition to these eight intriguing and surprisingly filmic compositions we get a bonus track, another recording with Aaron Martin called The Cup Of Remembered Things. Relying on eerie found sounds and the occasional supernatural vocal sample it serves as a delicate coda to an impressive record that wears the ambition of its concept lightly.
