The first thing that strikes you about the new Red Snapper album is how much the band have raised their game. There’s no reason why bands shouldn’t get better over time, it’s just that a lot of names don’t stay hungry and creative. To start with it’s a great idea; an album inspired by the band’s recent soundtrack for cult 70s Senegalese road movie “Touki Bouki” – the first independent African film which was recently restored by Martin Scorcese and which is first and foremost an afro-funk odyssey in itself. Red Snapper have toured with the film for a year, playing the soundtrack live to audiences across Europe; themes from the score having been developed and extended to form Hyena. Hitting the studio at the end of this long haul on the road has delivered a super-tight energized performance, reminiscent of a 1970’s approach to recording. And the 70’s are all over this soundtrack, combining beautifully with a cutting edge futuristic musicality that sets Red Snapper apart. Hyena is a reflection of Red Snapper’s work over the last two decades. They don’t just pull it off, they make it sound easy, and that must be the result of touring hard before putting the tracks to tape. This is more than a soundtrack….. Hyena is a timeless, African influenced album which has as much to do with the future as it has the past.

The new album from alternative music veterans Tape marks their 14th year of activity. It’s called Casino and was recorded in the legendary Atlantis studio in Stockholm by engineer Janne Hansson in December 2013. The music of Tape still continues it’s growth, in it’s own way, separated from the rest of the world in many ways. This time the emotional depth and interest in details are even stronger and clearer. The album has been mixed by Andreas Werliin and mastered by Mell Dettmer.

TRS043 is the feature full length album from Russian duo, Daydreamer. Entitled “Camus”, it is an homage of sorts to the great French existentialist writer of the same name. Like the band name suggests, it’s a dreamy mix of melodic post rock ambiance, and serves as a sort of soundtrack to the road movie that Albert Camus lived… and died on…

This release comes as usual in two versions. The first limited version, in an edition of 90 copies, comes in the form of a multi page booklet that is hinged in the corner and fans open into an abstract mandala of sorts. The cover photo is printed on sheer Japanese tissue paper, and is hand adhered and shredded… The pages are printed on super heavyweight Moab paper, and are punched, collaged, sewn, stamped, doodled, and in general hand worked as usual. The back of the pages are a spray stenciled daydream of their own! Hanging from the front corner of each booklet is a little capped vial containing most of a Gauloises cigarette… the brand that Camus obsessively smoked until the end… feel free to light it up, listen, and start a daydream of your own! Each booklet comes in a 6″square, spray painted, punched and stamped translucent envelope.

“British musician Jo Johnson’s debut solo album for Further Records, Weaving, betokens an exciting presence in the world of minimalist composition.

“Ancestral Footsteps” opens the LP with cascades of cyclical harp-like sounds, an homage to one of Johnson’s primary inspirations: Alice Coltrane. Channelling rigorous new age and mesmerizing Riley-esque/Reichian minimalism, the piece accrues heft and intensity, with occasional bursts of synthetic, tribal clapping until it fades out with cinematic flourish. The title track gradually alters simple guitar and keyboard phrases, along with a chiming motif that multiplies in a hall of mirrors. The disorientating arpeggios form moiré patterns against colossal bass notes. The mood lightens considerably with “Words Came After Music,” whose sweeping strings and drones could take you to whatever your idea of heaven is. Interestingly, the title of the piece is inspired by an anthropological theory Johnson stumbled across that musical ability predates language in humans. With its sombre, undulating synths and lustrous highs and lows, “In the Shadow of The Workhouse” plumbs profound emotional depths. Epic closer “Silver Threads” starts as an almost silent retreat in the vein of Laurie Spiegel’s Appalachian Grove or Eno and Budd’s The Pearl with the faint hum and buzz of telegraph wires, until four minutes in a stoic pulse and suspenseful chiming motif arise, buttressed by glowing synth sighs and the LP’s only percussive thumps (think Incunabula era Autechre).

While inspired by the “serious music” of Arvo Pärt, Wim Mertens and others, Johnson’s mandalas of tone mantras offer a playful, DIY sense of adventure, as you might expect from the former guitarist for incendiary punk group Huggy Bear and a long-term co-organizer of London’s Bleep43 techno club night and label. Weaving condenses Johnson’s long love affair with free jazz, minimalism and electronic music and this unique ambient composition is invested with powerful emotional resonance.”

San Francisco-based artist Christopher Willits first came onto my radar with his video tutorials on Ableton Live — thanks Chris, those were super helpful. From those clips, it was obvious that Willits had a serious passion for music, technology, and video. So it’s not surprising that his latest LP for Ghostly, OPENING, combines those loves into an “immersive audio-visual project.”

Using seven ambient tracks, seven scenes of visuals shot around the world, and seven photographic prints, OPENING follows Willits’ recent production help on Tycho’s Awake (another mega-chill producer on the Ghostly roster) with his own multimedia experience. “There are no actors or dialogue in this film,” explains Willits. “The audience and their perception is the main character, and everyone’s imagination is going to create some meaning that’s relevant to their own experience.” Like stoner TV favorite Planet Earth or the most incredible screensaver you’ve ever dreamed of, OPENING looks to be a meditative trip through the dreamiest moments of Willits’ recent life. His travels, his music, and his cinematic visuals are pretty damn relaxing.

Francesco Giannico is an italian electroacoustic musician, videoartist and webdesigner. He is co-founder of the Italian Soundscapes Archive (AIPS) and Oak Editions Label. He’s graduated in “Musicology and Musical Heritage” at the University of Lecce with a thesis on “History of film music”.

He published his works for many labels and he collaborated with many artists like: Bruno Dorella, Amy Denio, Kim Cascone, Thollem McDonas, Zac Nelson, Stefan Bonitatibus , Ben Chatwin, Mary Levykina, Anna Aleksandra Waliszewska. Fabio Orsi , Alessio Ballerini.

His musical approach is better described as a cinematic journey which pushes the boundaries of digital media even further by incorporating smooth melodies and gentle textures. More canonical instruments such as guitar and piano are constantly present into Francesco Giannico’s music, within interrupted structures or long and dreaming
sonorous carpets.

During the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 he created with Alessio Ballerini the network “Archivio Italiano dei Paesaggio Sonori” to promote and diffuse the soundscapes culture www.archivioitalianopaesaggisonori.it

Thurston Moore wrote (from Sonic Youth): “…Even less jazzic is Folkanization by Francesco Giannico. This young Italian electro-acoustic composer in whose work we can hear tendrils of everything from Luigi Nono to Toru Takemitsu. Filled with odd details, the music is fascinating.”
