The Tape Project was recorded between 2010 and 2012.
The concept of this was to make songs that were entirely free of the computer (from making sounds all the way to the final mix). This started a new way of working and capturing a bit more freedom and allowing to focus on arrangement more with ears instead eyes.
All tracks were produced with a small eurorack modular synthesizer with analog step sequencers in it. This system worked well with a TR-808 and other older synths, then every synth was routed to the mixing console and then finally recorded to cassette tape.
The tape support has been choosen for the added sound of the compression and the added extra noise seemed to gel nicely with the compositions.
Spanning from ambient to deep techno with few dub elements, the album consists of seven full lenght original takes recorded on tapes. No edits, no post-production, no computer.

1. Whitehope 01:02:53
Several years ago, I imagined a place named Whitehope. It formed in my mind as naturally as any logic or observation might – it almost seemed to already exist. I had to look it up to make sure it didn’t. Once the seed had been planted, I imagined even further – what was Whitehope like? It was blurry, slightly warm, sunny with buildings made of smoothed ivory that could either be churches or lighthouses. A lighthouse might make sense, because I knew that Whitehope was an island, surrounded on all sides by a furious bubbling blue sea. It submitted to the ocean waves via rocky crags and clay-colored sand, while inland there were mountains surrounded by rolling green hills and pastoral fields filled with yellow flowers. It all sounded so perfect. I had to etch out some kind of aural tribute to this fictional place, perhaps even something that could stand up to the feeling of actually being there. So I set out on my course to find Whitehope in my instruments and on my tapes. Three different attempts to reach it failed, and landed me in different territories altogether that have themselves been issued under other names. Only when I began to give up on ever finding Whitehope did I arrive there, and when I did, I didn’t even know I had made the trip. I had relinquished all hope of constructing my passage to this beautiful place to the fact that some ideas are just too perfect to ever create or attain. Then one night, while chasing some tangential idea in my studio that felt good, I did it. At first it was like remembering a dream – that foggy sensation that something made sense, even though it was not supposed to, and that you just couldn’t forget it. I went to sleep that night with my completed recording and when I woke up, I realized what I had done. Cradling the sound of Whitehope are several layers (about a dozen) of oceanic field recordings – sea sound reconstituted into fantasist backdrop. Then nestled deep inside are buoyant stabs of chords that punctuate and propel a coalescing haze of pads, glossing lazily over a subdued rhythm section that could almost be a heartbeat. By the end of the hour, everything chimes together in a shimmering white glow, pure harmony. Now that I’ve finally reached Whitehope, I don’t need to worry about ever leaving it, and neither do you.

Dream-state fog rolls over dew covered kick drums left to fill up with rain water in the bottom of a ravine. Everything is blurry, slow like syrup, but if you squint and close one eye you can make out movements and a few round shapes in the abyss. Bliss lights up your mind and skin like a new drug, you could feel like this forever and never go back. Endless endless endless. Goodnight.

Recorded during the same dream-state session as Whitehope, these three versions subtly mutate and tangentially explore the hour long centerpiece track on the CD-R. When ripping the tape the recordings were laid to, it became apparent that the cassette itself was degrading the audio more than usual. Having tested the rest of the cassettes I ordered in the same batch, I determined that all of them shared this odd trait. The tapes record and play back just fine, yet they seem to process the audio in interesting ways that actually add to the quality of the music. So I decided to release this cassette version of the album, on intentionally degraded black cassettes, essentially making this the “black” version of Whitehope. The nature of the cassette degradation means that no two copies of the cassette will sound alike, and future listens may reveal deeper grades of degradation, making for a truly unique and transforming listening experience. Deep analog forests of cloudy techno!

Coppice Halifax has always been an elementally and seasonally inspired project, a fact longtime listeners know quite well by now. Cornucopiad is the bounty of my first Autumn recording session in 2014, heralding the return of cool air, the smell of smoky backyards and the turning from green to orange and brown. A celebration of inevitable death and decline, self-sacrifice in the name of composting and subsequent rebirth. Renewal through destruction and regeneration. Three pieces of Impressionist techno that tread the borderline between organic and electronic, as with most things this plentiful year has produced. So, make some coffee, put on a sweater and enjoy the first fruits of my Halifaxian Autumn.

September brings cooler air and shorter days, a welcome respite from the oppressive heat of each Carolinian sub-tropical summer. Appropriately, the ninth RX of the year is a cool, dusky sweep of burnt leaves and deep golden hues of setting sunlight, all carried fragrantly along on a light breeze that curves in the purple air like invisible poetry. A wondrous calm surrounds the listener with gently bubbling hi hats and AM radio fizzed chord stabs, while the last remnant of a house bassline repeats lazily in a lock-groove.

all art has to be combined with the notion of outlast. this can be only realized when the energies of the expenditure do not disappear and get stored in the creation. to get this creative process started, an artist needs to open himself to the world collapsing upon him.“a day in the life” – the brand-new ambient and beyond album by lawrence, confirms this assumption – yet no world really collapsed on the dj and producer from hamburg. instead his emotional perception danced upon friendship and wanderlust and he put together twelve tracks for an album dedicated to his long lasting relation to toshiya kawasaki, man of action behind labels like mule musiq, endless flight and mule electronic, and the artist stefan marx.
besides co-running the label dial and the mathew gallery in berlin lawrence is constantly releasing music on his own labels
and befriended platforms like smallville records. furthermore the north german regularly contributes to kawasaki’s imprints mule musiq and electronic. just recently he dropped the ep “blue mountain” on mule musiq – a deep emotional foretaste of what “a day in the life” delivers on album length.
the music he shares on his latest long player isn’t linked to a special place or event. he mostly produced it up-road on his dj trips around the globe including toshiya’s homeland japan. back in his cosy backyard studio in hamburg he finished all musical pieces and mixed them down with a lot of joy.
they are listening to great track names like “nowhere is a place” or “lost in joy”, which allow in combination with the lovingly detailed sounds imaginative mind games. in terms of style ambient calls the tune and opens the genre into the wide open with the very own musical and emotive language of lawrence.
a track like “nowhere is a place” spreads smoothly twisted spectral vibes with blurring sounds that could easily originate from alienated instruments like a damaru or a conch horn. lawrence himself keeps it secret and let the music speak for itself. sometimes soft sizzling noise slides under gentle balanced ambient air like in the track “the visit”.
in other arrangements he let the chords dance with cute smacking electronic glimpses or odd slow-motion melodies remind on the work of hans-joachim roedelius and his love for the gentle swing.
all compositions float and sound like the improvisations of a virtuoso who has forgotten his virtuosity in order to drown real deep in his creations. for lawrence the album is “a triple buddy record” as not only his emotional content is included in the finished product. also his friends stefan marx – who is in charge for the artwork – and mule musiq head toshiya kawasaki have been profoundly involved in the outcome.
“since ten years the three of us work together. the record shows this very nicely in terms of our love for ambient music and cover artwork. the cover shows stefan’s sublet apartment in nyc – also a very ambient place.
the idea for the record emerged out of a sudden inspiration and this fits prefect to the way how toshiya runs a label where sharing a good natural wine is more important than marketing.”
lawrence confesses about the genesis of “a day in the life” and its emotional content. it is a weightless one where all feelings are stored supremely in what you can hear, see and hold in hand. and they are not made for them alone. they are there to share.

Jordi Saludes, musical architectural mason, & dj from Barcelona, Spain has published multitudinous albums, eps and a long list of 12″ on various European labels. Under his D-FRIED nom de plume, he mixes electronic textures and urban vertex sounds with ornate rhythms, building with ordinary noises and subtle digital melodies, funneling soundtracks for city travelers. After his first album “Clouds Leave No Trace” on Phonocake reached the fleck as one of the very few best top speed net label albums in 2009, he appeared again in variegated compilations in Europe and Japan in labels like Mille Plateaux/Force Intel, Lemongrass Music, Mizukage Recs, Phonocake, Discontinu, Emilii, Disboot, etc…His second album “The Lost Tomorrow” (Discontinu 2013) had a very sweltering welcome in Spain, with excellent reviews in magazines and other international media. With quite a few releases on his fricassee pan, D-Fried is always involved in phrenic collaborations with other artists, working on different sides of the conduit aqueducts, and making music for commercials, documentaries, films, contemporary dance, audiovisual installations, and websites. As with most Clean Error artists hes been listening and building his musical apparatus since childhood and has glommed onto his influences from literally most any genre of music from his vast vinyl, CD, and cassette .mp3 collection that flew on through to his eardrums other side. Disinclining a few genres of course, Jordis influences include music from labels and artists from Warp, Mille Plateaux, Moor Music, Rephlex, City Centre Offices, Planet Mu, Soma, etc, however, Jordi is probably most influenced by others artists such as Brian Eno, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Larry Heard, OMD, Future Sound Of London, John Carpenter, Photek, Biosphere, Cliff Martinez, Drexciya, etc. which you could probably, as well as Clean Errors other artists, discuss minute by hour, hour by month, or month by year. All that being said again, his latest and first phenomenal release for New Yorks Clean Error Records Peak Shift Effect is exquisitely recorded much like live real time players performances recorded by tracking analogously one track after the other. Much of the rhythms themselves were created utilizing software such as Battery, Kontakt, Reaktor or Ultrabeat, The rest of the tracking came from hardware instruments themselves played in real time. Jordi is not a hardware/analog fundamentalist: He loves software variables as much as any other kind of instrument or device able to make the dulcet of noise however, Jordis purpose to avoid the use of soft synths was none other than only to put some limitations in his creative process, aiming to traipse through different paths, undertaking different decisions and ending up with a different results. ” In this work Jordi incorporated some small classic machinery like the Korg Kaossilator, PCM100 Philips, Casio VL-1 or Yamaha MU15, giving a tinge of lo-fi to the melodies, because of the sounds and the limitations of interpretation with mini keys, micro keys and tactile surfaces, what began as an experiment ended up taking a role that Jordi never initially expected. A Roland Juno 106, an Ensoniq ASR10 and a Yamaha DX7 have also played an important role, along with a couple of Alesis unit effects and a slew of guitar pedals. With all this said, it is certainly apparent that Jodi Saludes knows his way around quite a large apparatus of gear and this is certainly audible to the other side of any listeners eardrum on any planetary scale. Clean Error Records hopes you enjoy DFRIED Peak Shift Effect as much as we do.

Not Waving – Voices II

Self-released 2nd volume out of three. Edition of 100. Currently hitting a golden streak of releases, Alessio Natalizia of Walls ushers out a 2nd volume of synaesthetically-attuned, motorik electronica as Not Waving. As with Volume I, he again weaves inspiration from Oliver Sacks, Ivan Pavlov, B.F. Skinner and “the enduring relation between perception, memory, attention and comprehension” into minimal, stealthily emotive abstractions nodding as much to early Radiophonic pioneers as Italian Library records and early minimal wave explorers. What sets him apart from reams of others operating int his quadrant is a well timed sense of discipline and momentum, never outstaying his welcome and constantly keeping our attention with subtle variations, quicksilver turns of phrase and crude but effortlessly effective melodic progressions helmed by tape-lagged grooves. Not Waving – Voices I

Jelly green C30 cassette with hand-numbered 12-panel J-card. edition of 100 – comes with an instant free download of the album** Alessio Natalizia ov Walls meditates on the fidelity of memory and synaesthetic perception with his third release as Not Waving. Taking inspiration from neurologist Oliver Sacks, the philosophy and thinking of B.F. Skinner, and the research of Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov (not CoH), ‘Voices I’ spans seven hazily hypnagogic pieces of chattering drum machine pulses and groggy synths threaded and embedded with tape-manipulated field recordings challenging the listeners sense of space and place with intra-dimensional, extra-textural ambiguity. It makes a virtue of the uncanny spaces between his various hardware “voices” and the way we sense and feel their shapes, timbres and textures in a 2D environment. Or to put it another way, it’s trippy sh*t for fans of vintage Italian industrial experiments and the likes of Thought Broadcast.

Conjuring images of a primal futurism, this alchemical blending-of-sound is a ceremonial offering to the forgotten gods. The Ancestor Circle is a new tribal-ambient-electronic collaboration, the first recording from Roach & Reyes since Vine ~ Bark & Spore (Timeroom 2000). This is the lost chapter of a long soulful journey that has taken twists and turns in its unfoldment. The music feels steeped in a frothy mind-altering blend, waiting for years as the potency increased. Roach & Reyes combined their instinctual nature — developed over almost a decade of worldwide live and studio adventures — leading up to the core of what became The Ancestor Circle. It is in this circle that their sound is unearthed from deep within their primordial soundworld, where prehistory meets future-tech creating a sound impossible to carbon date.
Like the audio artifacts of a lost tribe, the studio source recordings that form this album’s foundation were uncovered in 2013 on a cryptically-marked set of tapes. Created the week before Roach & Reyes’ May 2000 concert at Tucson’s Temple of Music and Art, this is their last joint studio project as Reyes passed on to The Ancestor Circle in 2009.
Roach comments, “Jorge is still very much alive here in the circle where we always met with an unspoken language of sound constantly moving through us. As I completed this music now, adding new elements and evolving the arrangement, I could feel Jorge’s spirit listening and interacting with me in the studio, offering feedback or sometimes making his guttural sounds of agreement like he would do in the past when we were deep in the process of carving on a mix. Just as in previous magical studio and stage experiences, we are in the circle once again.”
For thousands of years, music was created to assist entrance to expanded states of consciousness, support a passage of life, birth and death and invoke the gods, spirits, and allies. While the abundance of today’s entertainment-music has lost this powerful inner core, on The Ancestor Circle it is fully reinstated. This is a new “medicine music” as it should be: a probing visceral experience with the power to illuminate and shroud in mystery, digging deep into zones hidden within the psyche. It offers a potent realm of renewal for those seeking an unfiltered, cathartic rinse-down of today’s technological, modern world; it helps hit the reset button of perception.
Rising up from a dark shroud of night to embrace life, an ancient voice chants in serpentine ecstasy only to subside and hover next to a slow realm of eternal time drawn from electronics, percussion, prehispanic flutes, ocarinas, other acoustic instruments and silence. When the sound dissolves beyond recognition, a subconscious landscape arises, whispering of faded visions painted on stone, echoing on studio walls, of times gone by and times to come. Roach & Reyes are still here bringing us messages from the infinite.
Artist Bios
Jorge Reyes took an ethno-musicological approach to music-making on 20 solo albums; released throughout the late 80s, 90s, and 00s these albums all has a special emphasis on indigenous and shamanic traditions from Reyes’ native Mexico. After years of tirelessly performing across Europe, he met Roach in the early 90s at a festival on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Along with the Vine ~ Bark & Spore collaboration with Roach, Reyes & Roach teamed with Spanish electric guitarist Suso Saiz for two mid-90s albums from their group project, Suspended Memories (Music From The Hearts of Space 1993 & 1994). Reyes passed away on February 7, 2009.
Steve Roach is a pioneering cornerstone of ambient-atmospheric-electronic music with over 100 albums to his name. Since the early 80s, Roach has approached music like a medicine man approaching the void: engaging the challenge, uncovering new mysteries, and bringing them back to share with the world. From the expansive, time-suspending spaces reflecting his spiritual home in Arizona to the fire breathing, ethno-ambient expressions woven from all things electric and organic, Roach’s long list of groundbreaking recordings are fueled by his prolific nature and uncompromising approach.
