Hush Hush’s curatorial mission has long been immersed in the cinematic world. Ever since our inception in 2012, we’ve been driven by a desire to discover sounds from underground artists that transport us into new atmospheres and evoke soundtracks to imaginary films. The 90th release in our catalog marks the first time we’ve gone directly to the source, as we’re proud to present the original soundtrack to babyteeth, a short film conceived, written, and directed by Austin Johnson, with original music composed by Austin’s new musical alias, breaking. Austin Johnson (aka breaking) is a 22-year-old Brooklyn-based musician and director with a penchant for creating intimate, subtle, beautiful moments. He’s been quietly releasing music under his own name for the past couple years, sharing a string of songs and an EP, all primarily exclusive to his Bandcamp page. Each new song provided a glimpse into his blossoming sonic world of sublime minimal ambient compositions. His interest in music has grown simultaneously with his interest in filmmaking, both hobbies spurred during his adolescent years while editing skate videos of him and his friends. His love of editing quickly spread to exploring digital art and creating electronic music. These creative passions guided Austin to attend the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn to further pursue these artistic outlets, recently graduating this past summer. babyteeth is a hypnotic short film that carries a comforting, drifting, yet slightly uneasy tone throughout its 9-minute running time. Inspired by the alienation he experienced as a 10-year-old child moving back to the US after spending his entire childhood in London, babyteeth impressively captures the beauty of isolation through serene, awkward, magnetic shots. The soundtrack collects 9 tracks that Austin composed for the film – 4 of which were ultimately used as sonic vignettes in the footage -and presents them in their complete form. A gorgeous 36-minute journey that reflects the film’s introspective aesthetic, babyteeth o.s.t. signals the official debut album from Austin’s new alter-ego, breaking.
