The mystical and alluring dark side of the moon appears to some people just as the dark side of the human soul itself; a place of the unknown. It is exactly this forgotten, mostly hidden side of human nature that Lars Wickinger tackles on his debut album The Unknown Side of the Moon, transforming this into groove-infused soundscapes. An emotional journey of passionate techno, melodic darkness and hypnotic bass lines. In the same way the full moon represents a dark and unknown world for us, the music of Berlin’s DJ and producer Lars Wickinger elicts just these kinds of attractive mystical worlds. For this project, Lars Wickinger put his trust in two of his favourite machines the Elektron Analog Keys and the Elektron Analog Rytm a minimalist approach and constraint in design leads us to the maximum listening experience. Owing to its tasteful mix of club-suitable, peak-time tracks, melodic and atmospheric pieces and very personal topics of the Berlin DJ, The Unknown Side of the Moon is an outstanding, timeless yet modern album. Techno raw and unpolished, modern and traditional. The two track titles Now or Never and No Mind are about life in the Now It’s about living more aware and living in the present. Follow Me is about how we communicate nowadays the outside seems to be getting more important than the inside. Die Zeit Der Wlfe is all about the wolf, who is symbolic for the fears and repressed nature of man. Ghost Love addresses the spirit world, in which we will all return after death and For my Mom is about saying goodbye. This unknown and suppressed nature inside us triggers human fascination, fear and hatred. But it is precisely this animal in man that we must not fear, but get to know better, accept and understand that it is our connection to nature, from which we came and to which we will also return. To think that we do not belong to this entirety of nature, but exist outside of it, the fact, that we have alienated ourselves from it this is the tragedy of today’s people Lars Wickinger Such statements and the ability to deal with uncomfortable but fascinating topics, shows the authenticity of the album, which is not determined by external trends, but comes from the heart of Lars Wickinger. An emotional and thrilling album with attention to detail and melodic charm. The vocals and lyrics to Now or Never and One of Those Boys are by Michael Skelton aka Skelly; whose voice fits perfectly to Lars Wickinger’s deep arrangements.
