Jim Wallis is a musician and producer based in east London. Europa is the score for the documentary of the same name by Kivu Ruhorahoza (Grey Matter, Things of the Aimless Wanderer), which will premiere in the main competition at the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam on 23rd November 2019. As an engineer and producer, working out of the in-house studio of celebrated independent label Bella Union, he has worked with a variety of artists including 2018 albums by Simon Love and Me For Queen. Previously a longtime member of My Sad Captains, in 2019 he has toured Asia and Europe with New York-based dream pop band Still Corners and is currently playing in Modern Nature with members of Ultimate Painting and Beak>. Europa is his first feature length score. He recently scored the Guardian documentary Someone Else’s War.

“I was classically trained on the piano, but I played in indie bands throughout my twenties, primarily as a drummer. In 2011, I played on the same bill as A Winged Victory For The Sullen at the beautiful Botanique venue in Brussels and discovered their music for the first time. It made a lasting impression on me and made me start exploring the world of neo-classical and ambient music, discovering artists like William Basinski, Tim Hecker, Bing & Ruth, and Stars Of The Lid. The album Evening Star by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno influenced the more ambient tracks on the album, Audition in particular. The film – Europa – is about Simon, an asylum seeker who has recently killed himself, who returns to commune with important people from his life. Essentially, he is suspended in limbo, which became a central idea to me when writing the score.” Jim Wallis, 2019
