Like many producers from Chicago, Hakim Murphy works hard. Year in, year out, you’ll find him releasing four or five 12″ singles a year. Here he serves up a trio of tasty treats on D3 Elements. Opener “Boxbeat” pits ragged, acid-style electronics against ultra-dreamy chords, and a rhythm track that pops, clicks, hisses and – most importantly of all – bands hard. He flips the script on “Taste O’Rainbow”, dropping an organ-laced roller whose restless energy is built around hypnotic stabs, metronomic beats and a booming bassline. Best of all, though, is fizzing closer “Freshness”, which expertly fuses Chicago jack, with the far-sighted futurism of Detroit techno.
