The news that Detroit producer Terrence Dixon is retiring from music-making came as a shock to his fans, but as this release shows, his influence remains. Knotweed has in the past released original material from Dixon, and Petit’s “Stars” certainly takes its cue from his work. It’s based on similarly agile, lithe rhythms and pointillist tones and to Petit’s credit, he makes these abstract elements danceable. However, it’s hard to emulate Dixon and his version is an expansive, brooding affair, textured pads tethered with subtle percussive ticks. Returning to earth, Petit delivers “Variation” and “Prapators”, two smartly executed, tough grooves, full of subtle filters and sassy bleeps.

Rolando inaugurates the launch of his new label, R3 Roland Rocha, with a three-track EP from himself. It sees the revered techno staple deliver some streamlined toughness that’ll go down well with fans of teutonic techno styles, and those who enjoyed his Hiatus EP on Delsin. The title track delivers a linear, filter-stabbed rhythm to make the dancefloor sweat, while “Non” mixes tribal house elements with industrial techno. “Time Adjustment” sees Rolando go minimal – the same type of minimal you’d expect from Mike Dehnert – and it’s a great example of how few elements produced well with the right amount of effects make for timeless club techno.

As the title would suggest, this double pack monster from Roger Gerressen and Ivano Tetelepta is forged from digging through dusty records to create a spotters delight of beat constructions to make DJ Shadow blush. While the pair’s grounding in house and techno shines through, not to mention Nilla’s role as an All Inn offshoot, the real informer here is hip hop, as titles such as “Kool As Keith” attest. Throughout there’s a tone of smoky, late-night ambience which lends itself perfectly to this kind of project, but it still kicks when it wants to. The title track surges forth on a limber break while “Mambo Town” shimmies with resurrected energy. There are plenty of mellow moments to be enjoyed as well, so if you like your beats outsourced then get on this sizable package.

Though Matt Karmil seemed to appear out of nowhere last year, his debut album, —-, has the considered approach of a producer with more than just a few releases to his name. In its press release, Karmil explains that, though he’s been making music for years, he had no intention of releasing anything until recently, when it was reportedly coaxed out of him by Kompakt artists Popnoname and Ada.

It’s not hard to see why Karmil’s work resonates with the Kompakt crew. Like many in the Cologne label’s family, the Englishman’s productions are warm, rich and heady, treading the line between Funktion One stacks and home stereos. Grounded in house, the aesthetic across —-‘s eight tracks is hazy but far from lo-fi. Aside from the occasional piano stab, tape hiss and acid squelch, most of the sounds here are unrecognisable. It’s clear that Karmil obsesses over the samples he uses, and the rewards are obvious.

The first of eight tracks is “Open,” a murky six-minute workout that sets the tone for the rest of the album. For the most part, the next 45 minutes see subdued kick drums paired with simple, unobtrusive basslines, both serving as a sturdy platform for Karmil’s collages of moody samples. Like a lot of quality deep house, the emphasis is not on snappy drums or swing, but on atmospherics. Karmil’s deft approach creates some truly immersive moments, and the highlights come when the tracks stretch out. At ten minutes long, “Frankrike (float)” is one of the album’s choice cuts—it’s not much more than a simple loop, where the same short string and keys samples repeat for its duration. In many respects, —- is an example of classic minimalism. But those weary of the tag risk missing out on the warmth of Karmil’s palette, and the unique charm that comes with it.
