Daaaamn, Strut just p*ssed off a tonne of discogs-fiending Dance Mania noobs with this heavyweight collection of 24 cuts culled from the annals of Chicago’s baddest imprint. In recent years there’s abeen a massive resurgence of interest around one of Chicago’s most influential labels, thanks in no small part to the DJ sets of Night Slugs’ Bok Bok and L-Vis, Jackmaster, Tom Trago and the whole modern Juke/Footwork movement, who’ve all given this sound a frame of reference in today’s no-holds-barred dance scene. This compilation is a proper education, spanning foundational early cuts circa late ’80s/early ’90s from Hercules’ ‘7 Ways’ to The House Master Boyz And The Rude Boy Of House’s ‘House Nation’ and Armando’s ‘Falling’ on the first disc, through to the 2nd wave of wall-bangers from DJ Funk’s ‘House The Groove’, Paul Johnson’s ‘Feel My M.F. Bass’ and Traxmen & Eric Martin’s filth anthem ‘Hit It From The Back’ on a 2nd disc charting their mid ’90s golden streak. It’s all untouchable, no frills dancefloor gear and hugely recommended to all insatiable dancer and DJs.

Launched earlier this year with the saturated boogie of Atlanta’s Moon B, Going Good demonstrated they were a label with a keen ear for unheralded talent, which is further strengthened on this second 12″ release from Aquarian Foundation. This Vancouver group are part of a much larger collective called Mood Hut whose name is gonna be popping up all over the place this year, and rightly so on the basis of this Silent Teaching EP. There’s a charming fuzziness to “Mystery Track” that’s reminiscent of Huerco S but Aquarian Foundation still have their own rhythmic swagger and it shines through here, whilst “Caravan Of Dreams” opts for a more introspective tone, vaguely reminiscent of Drexciya ruminating on their aqua tax bill. “Hard Talk” shows AQN FDN’s capacity to drop the tempo, lazily hazing out on a head fuck beat down tip, whilst “Dream Of Red Chamber” is simply mind bending. They called Going Good for a reason you know!

One of the best compliments you can pay a minimal techno producer is that they have an ability to make a lot with few elements. While Deepchord’s layered, textured sound could be described as maximal techno, on this release for Soma, its simplicity is its strength. In reality, not much happens over the course of the ten-minute plus “Luxury 1”, yet its dubby beats, sub-aquatic chords and occasional diversions into dreamy reveries is over before the listener realises it. “Luxury 2” is more dance floor-friendly, but despite this, the break beats are gentle and unassuming and the melodies subtle yet insidious. It makes for a straightforward but seductive combination.

For many, the Silent Teaching EP released on Going Good earlier this year was the first exposure to Aquarian Foundation, a Vancouver collective of unidentified form whose approach to hardware driven analogue sounds is blessed with a similar New Age tone to much Future Times output. They do however have strong links with Vancouver collective Mood Hut, releasing two cassette albums through the label last year; the Language Of The Hand EP sees AQN FDN return to Mood Hut, gracing the label’s second 12″ after that excellent Devonian Garden record from Cloud Face earlier this summer. A similarly deep and murky tone pervades this Aquarian Foundation release which grabs your attention as soon as “Ululu II” gloopily lollops into groove. “Girdle of Venus” is a considered highlight which could feasibly sit on the B Side of a Sun God 12.

As a key player in the emerging 130bpm movement, Wen returns to Keysound Recordings with a refix of seminal early Dizzee Rascal production “Strings Hoe”. With the original itself vinyl only, the refix will remain on white label but is released with Dirtee Stank’s blessing. Keysound’s 2013 began with Wen’s debut “Commotion” EP for the imprint, setting out his trademark style that uses the unique identity and power of the grime MC voice but couples it to the space and bass weight of early dubstep. Given the year ended with fellow grime-inspired pioneer Logos and his celebrated “Cold Mission” album, it hints at yet greater things to come in 2014 from Wen and the entire 130-centric Keysound camp. The flip of the 12” is marked by heater “Signal,” part grimey soca-esque dancefloor banger part semantic exercise, as it bites, toys with and spits out classic grime vocab before breaking out into the mid point between encoded rhythmic percussion and Morse code. Following a flourish of activity towards the end of 2013, including E.m.m.a’s debut as a Dummy Album of the year, Logos’ “Cold Mission” as a top 15 for Fact Magazine and Keysound itself as a Resident Advisor Top 5 label of 2013, the imprint rolls on into 2014 with an established dancefloor anthem from Wen.
