Having made his name with releases for Tresor and Deeply Rooted, French producer Marcelus has adopted the well worn role of label boss with the Singular Records operation, but you can’t fault the music that’s surfaced on the label thus far. Marcelus himself helms this fifth Singular transmission, with a four track grip that really demonstrates his variety and prowess for techno that is both razor-sharp and trippy. Lead track “Direct Drive” encapsulates this approach perfectly, as a dusty, booming groove jack hammers its route through a wall of abstract sound design that feels oddly liquid and rubbery at the same time. “Savage Pattern” leans more on the abstract side of things, with a minimalist, almost tribal backbone wedged deep into a production that feels almost ominously alive. “Oneness” could easily be mistaken for a Terrence Dixon track, whilst “Incantation” is the sort of techno you want to hear testing the intricacies and acoustics of a confined warehouse space installed with a Function One.

The in your face bassline of Mark Forshaw’s “Trouble With My Sines” gets this third release by the Lopasura label off to a burly, teeth-gritting start. It’s like the Emptyset having a disgruntled go at deep house. Panzerkreuz Records’ The Acid Mercenaries provide the first of two acid tracks on this various artist EP, and their a woozy, lo-fi “In The Smoke” is dark and long burning, while Benedikt Frey, who provided the label’s previous release, delivers a clubby 303 workout with drums and percussion like John Heckle. It’s the kicks, the booming, cabbalistic kicks of Drvg Cvltvre’s “Hierarchy Of Heritage” though, that really make this EP a delightfully monolithic DJ’s weapon.

Two years after his heavily charted LP “Who Made Up The Rules” on Ovum Recordings Agaric returns with a second anticipated studio full length album, and this time for his own label We Are. The debut made the #1 position on the Groove Magazine album chart, and it has now become one of the most charted releases all-time on Resident Advisor.

Whereas the morepart of the tracks on the debut were intended for Djs to play on the dancefloor, “Into The Large Air” presents songs which were made in an entirely different way, both from a technical and emotional standpoint. These tracks are all recorded very straightforward from daily sessions in Agaric’s Berlin studio during a fairly short period of time, using original sounds and trying different production ideas, doing multiple takes using the different drum machines & stomp boxes, effects and synths from the world of analog and digital music equipment – One thing to mention about this project is that special consideration was taken into account during the planning stages of this album to make the period of waiting, from the time of the creative process through mastering sessions to the time of the music reaching the listener, as short as possible.

In times of often standardized dance music and a publicity driven music industry the tracks are raw, spur of the moment, spontaneous, melodic, and they open heartedly reflects decades of involvement in a no-genre-specific world wide club scene, where creative people meet, share ideas, sounds, influences, and together produce the power to influence and inspire more people to create, to be original, and to help sustain and continue to grow the electronic music culture that we know and fell in love with.
