When Quintessentials launched the Thank You Freaks series last year, it boasted about delivering “hot tracks from hot producers”. There’s certainly plenty of top tackle on this third installment of the series. Jamie Trench’s “In Your What” is particularly attractive, thanks in no small part to the tactile brilliance of its bouncy, undulating synth bassline and subtle percussive builds. Also rather tasty is Jack Fell Down’s contribution, “Covered”, a surprisingly sparse chuck of US house revivalism with a 2013 twist. Best of all, though, is Anaxander’s “Hold Me”, an enveloping mix of saucer-eyed pads, tropical synth melodies, 909 beats and 303 acid lines.

Arne Weinberg goes undercover for this release on Danish label Echocord. The German producer has long been an exponent of deep Detroit techno and has released some stunning work on both his current label Diametric, and previous outlet AW. However, this moniker appears to be Weinberg’s platform for making music inspired by developments closer to home. The title track is a rolling dub techno affair, its cavernous chords and strong rhythm, as well as Weinberg’s subtle production, setting it apart from bog standard, echo chamber-loving releases. The introduction of a filter lends the track more momentum and means it doesn’t have that plodding feeling that many contemporary dub techno tracks are blighted with. Berghain resident Norman Nodge provides the remix, which like many of his reshapes, is in stark contrast to the relentless techno that his sets are associated with. That said, a booming, oversized bass drum underpins the arrangement, but its slower tempo and the fact that it underscores enveloping chords means that it sounds ponderous rather than punishing. While Phosphor marks a diversion from his usual approach, “Innocence & Purity” suggests that he can’t resist making melodic music: the reflective chords that emerge through the dusky, scuffled groove shows that Weinberg is a techno soul boy at heart.

Hayat Zor is a beautiful blend of rave-nostalgia, 80s electro-pop and Italo, all shot through with a melancholic, wistful air. Working with analog synths, vintage drum machines, live instrumentation, and the help of a few friends and collaborators along the way.

Encompassing four original productions and two remixes from Gavin Russom and Petrels, ‘Hayat Zor’ is a collection on which emotional resonance and technical expertise sit side by side. Dancefloor nous, enabled through a love of Italo Disco and Balearic convention, is a strong presence on the EP, with Wright pairing this quality with his enduring spiritual kinship with the music of British new wave artists such as New Order, Cabaret Voltaire and Devo. Although such reference points can be clearly grasped by the listener it is, as ever, to Wright’s immense credit that he employs them with such deftness he could be considered every bit an equal.
