Creeping ever closer towards their third year of existence, Modularz have remained steadfast in their aesthetic approach, deftly combining the dynamism of straight up techno with an intricately textured approach that has proved enduringly rewarding. Label boss Developer once again features prominently on their tenth entry, contributing four cuts. The expansive bassline to the opening track “Sequence 85” practically consumes you, with “Sequence 88” markedly sparser, allowing the rigid percussion and booming kicks centre stage. “Mover Of The Mercury” meanwhile combines linear, tribal drumming and bleak, distant drones, while “Gaining” is imbued with a surprisingly funky character a la Gesloten Cirkel, as dark synth horns snake around precision drums. The producer’s allies put in a fine showing too; last seen on Mote Evolver, Spaniard Psyk adds further balance with the subaqueous dub techno of “Transito”, whilst the unknown quantity Rhomb is on electrifying form with the Mike Parker-esque “Reboot”. Elyas’ “Camberwell” may seem to take its name from one of South London’s more picturesque locations, but the slamming techno stabs and granite drums are anything but polite, recalling Shed’s Equalized material; Ascion rounds things off with the trippiest cut of the release, as savage waveforms twist themselves around abstract atonal beeps.

Mile End Records brings it’s 4th installment of the compilation series – Chez Nous 4: Montreal House; compiled and mixed by Maus. Montreal is a world renowned centre for nightlife and electronic music. It’s clubs and parties draw tourists from around the globe. This scene over the years has naturally produced international caliber Djs and producers. Mile End Records series of compilations titled Chez Nous showcases this talent and tries to capture some of the nightlife vibe that makes Montreal so special. Maus who has made a mark on the Montreal Electronic music scene for over 15 years brings her diverse but signature sound of deep and grooving elements to the Chez Nous series. The mix contains big releases from artists Darius Syrossian, Hector Couto, Blond:ish, Nitin, Subb-an to name a few and a couple of unreleased gems by Maus!
Following the rip roaring success and widespread critical acclaim of Larse”’s poignantly melancholic remix of this timeless classic, Defected return with a second remix package that also features a re-mastered version of Candi Staton”’s original cut. With its classic disco beat and instruments, and her soulfully sublime praise vocals that have so easily stood the test of time, you would be forgiven for assuming this Gospel / Disco track was a re-release of a 70”’s disco classic. Indeed, stylistically speaking, there isn”’t much to differentiate it from much of her early output. Yet ”’Hallelujah Anyway”’, which was penned as a stage encore to ”’You Got The Love”’, was only recorded back in 2002 and its lyrical content is as equally poignant as her late 80”’s anthem. With its overwhelmingly positive message of the importance of having hope in the face of all adversity, Stanton showcases her talent for capturing a feeling that resonates across generations, reaffirming her status as the unprecedented soul diva of dance. Remixes this time round come from David Penn and Ashley Beedle, two legendary talents, both of whom retain the essence of the original while placing their own unique stamp on proceedings. Ashley Beedle”’s mixes feature early 90”’s-esque melodic synths, which drive through the building instruments and chopped up vocals with an upbeat energy, make it an ideal party piece, complimenting Staton”’s gospel vibes perfectly. Meanwhile David Penn”’s offering is equally energised, but with a gradual ascension of alternating keys chords which build subtly with Candi”’s vocals and then drop suddenly into a surprisingly low end refrain; it”’s a much naughtier twist on the original.
