Martin Wheeler used to make the sweetest electro known to man (or machine), before focusing on video game design (full disclosure: this writer is a fan of his ‘Go Robot’ game). However, it appears that Vector Lovers is never too far from Wheeler’s heart and on iPhonica he proves to be a master of electronic melody and harmony. Granted, the mood, particularly in the second half of the album is introspective, especially on the gloomy “Let’s Go Home” and the serene “Final Wish”, but iPhonica also shows that Wheeler is adept at making acid trax (“Kongaroid”); sensuous ambience (“Stargazing”) and as “On Kastanienallee” so beautifully demonstrates, wide-eyed electro.

Nang are in celebratory mood for this, their 100th release. They’ve picked a bit of a belter to mark the occasion, too, with Loudery joining forces with various studio-inclined pals to drop some soaring alt-disco goodness. Loudery’s original version of “Book of Brilliant Things” sounds like a nu-disco era take on Soul II Soul, all rising strings, luscious vocals and soaring grooves. “Wan (Book of Brilliant Things)”, with Derek Forbes and Mick MacNeil, contrasts the delicious strings with bubbling acid lines and earnest guitar solos, while James Bright’s remix of the original sounds even more 1989 than the original – think Nellee Hooper in house mode. The ‘Dub’ of “Wan”, which gives more emphasis to the acid lines, is also excellent.

Never afraid of pushing boundaries, the forward thinking Leftroom camp indulge their eclectic side with a with a remix package of an exciting London based band, Lois & The Love. Released in late 2012, ‘Dark Serenade/ Rabbit Hole’ was the band’s debut release and picked up plaudits from key tastemakers outlets, including The Guardian and Clash Music, who drew comparisons to icons including PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Janis Joplin. Providing remixes are a crop of seasoned producers, delivering a variety of interpretations… Up first label boss Matt Tolfrey’s dubbed out remix hones in on a single vocal phrase and, whilst using subtle melodies and modulated effects to create a dark yet dreamy atmosphere. Rising London producer/ DJ Alexis Raphael imparts what is fast becoming his trademark deep house spin on ‘Dark Serenade’ turning in a full bodied house affair that has already received Radio 1 plays courtesy of B. Traits. House music maestro Phil Asher turns in a jaunty, Afro beat-tinged take on ‘Rabbit Hole’ that showcases lead singer Lois Winstone’s sassy vocal in all its glory. Inspired by LCD Soundsystem, Asher’s mix keeps it rocky but will certainly resonate with the dance floor. Rounding off the package Marc Ashken provides a typically skewed interpretation on the mix of ‘Dark Serenade’ that retains the drama and atmosphere of the original whilst imparting sharp processing on its sonic make up. Asken’s mix builds over its 3 and half minute before launching into full flow in the final third. An interesting remix package of an exciting new band, delivered from one of house music’s most consistent labels. Lois & The Love’s remix package is out mid-March on Leftroom Limited.
