‘Timelines’ is the new LP from British house producer and DJ Luke Solomon. Alongside Luke’s original productions the album features a selection of handpicked remixes and the album presented as a continuous mix. Luke Solomon’s influence on house music has been strongly felt for many years. As a DJ and promoter he pioneered mid-week London clubbing with his legendary Space night alongside the late, great Kenny Hawkes. As a producer he has constantly delivered original, often idiosyncratic and always unique house music (and beyond) for an enviable list of imprints. As an A&R he has helped develop many a career (Tiefschwarz, Freeform Five and Isolee to name but a few) with Classic Music Company, and continues to do so with Classic and his new role as one of Defected’s A&R team. Speaking about making ‘Timelines’ Luke had this to say. “It is an album that I have been making and remaking over the last six years. I started work on it off of the back of The Difference Engine (Rekids), my last album under my own name. The idea was to make the album part of a trilogy, this one being representative of my more Balearic roots. The original version that was completed fell on deaf ears quite considerably and it became a bit of a sticking point for me. I decided to put it to one side and in the process started working on some other music, which in turn, helped me stumble across new sounds and production techniques. The initial idea was to work on a series of songs that represented significant points in my life, both lyrically and musically. It then became more relevant to the six years of writing and producing the album. A lot of shit happened, and I was able to pour it into finally completing the album. I then decided to keep the album guarded and close as it had become that personal. I didn’t want the album to be effected by opinions of those that were too close to me and the music. What I ended up with is something that has come straight from the heart, made possible by joining forces with a whole stack of talented musicians and singers over the last six years.” ‘Timelines’ is, as even the incredibly humble and self-effacing Solomon would agree, his best work to date, featuring contributions from Jon Marsh, Natalie Broomes, Terry Grant and Tiger Tiger. It’s also an album which is heavily song and musician focused, setting its stall out as a real listening experience from the off. A cohesive, deeply personal labour of love that is the culmination of years of work and countless emotional trials and tribulations.

Now available from Experimedia.net.* Nightmare Ending is the first proper Eluvium album released since 2010’s Similes, the unexpectedly vocal-heavy ambient-pop record that simultaneously delighted and confounded longtime fans. But the Nightmare Ending story actually began years earlier, as it was intended to be the follow-up to the watershed album, Copia. Conceived as a way of helping loosen his selfimposed ideals of perfection, Cooper labeled each Nightmare Ending track as either a “dream,” or an “imperfection” – a way of differentiating the philosophical concept of “dream vs. reality,” couched in the more tangible technical distinctions of “flawless vs. flawed.” With each progressive listen those differences naturally challenged themselves, and without relying on the standardized perfection protocol, Cooper became increasingly reluctant to release any of it. He shelved it, and pursued Similes instead. But Nightmare Ending wouldn’t go away; it lingered in the back of his mind, the abandoned fruits of a truly worthwhile and noble journey towards a less creatively constraining mindset. Cooper returned to it with renewed vigor, writing and recording in a blur of time that spanned several years, ending with a pair of inspired collaborations with Mark T. Smith of longtime friends and label mates, Explosions In The Sky (“Envenom Mettle,” closing Disc 1) and Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo (“Happiness,” closing Disc 2). Yes, yes, we know what you’re thinking. It’s a live album, and when are those ever very exciting? But just remember that they really can be, and trust us when we say that this one really, truly is. Like a modern day Live at Leeds, like the benevolent, neon twin of Live Evil, Jaga Jazzist’s wondrous new record is just that; a brilliant album on its own terms. It’s a psychedelic Bond soundtrack twisting and turning from the stage, propelling the listener forward on an epic emotional voyage. At times it seems to explode from the speakers in pure, exuberant colour, making you wonder if you’ve recently developed synesthesia. It moves with unrestrained ease from quiet reflection to cinematic, widescreen thunder, from Sound of Music pastoral joy to pulsing jazz chase sequences… and it makes you wonder why more of the music you hear isn’t quite so completely affecting.

Jaga Jazzist had long wanted to work with an orchestra, and when the British radio DJ Fiona Talkington introduced them to the Britten Sinfonia, they leapt at the chance to collaborate. The Barbican’s Chris Sharp promised to stage the results, and the team set about writing the work from scratch. Jaga wanted to make each musician feel like a central part of the performance, and this philosophy paid off in full. The music is full of exuberance and passion, each player becoming an equal part of a startlingly purposeful hive-mind.

Jaga have always taken a rigorous approach to their art, and they wanted to use the opportunity afforded by the album to push their own creativity forward. As such, they broke new ground personally. “Mathias’ trumpet solo on ‘Bananfluer Overalt’ is probably my favourite moment on the album,” says the group’s writer and creative driving force Lars Horntveth. “He really shines here and has the space and time to improvise in a way he hasn’t been able to do before with Jaga alone.”

That says a lot about this brilliant, unique record. It’s not often that an album comes along that offers so much. Its quieter moments could equal Shostakovich’s explorations of mortality, its full throttle thrusts match the visceral thrill of any young guitar band. We’d suggest that you won’t be disappointed in a listen, and that it might just change your day for the better.
